Blue Coast and Ribatejo

The Ribatejo contains the oldest prehistoric vestiges to be found in Portugal. It is however, the Arab world that abounds in the region, from Benavente to Abrantes, with plentiful architectural specimens from the 12th century onwards. From Romanic to Gothic, from the renaissance to Baroque, it can be found here.

Also visit the historical centers and thematic museums focusing on each Ribatejo town. From the "palafitas" houses (wooden houses on slits) along the river Tagus, or the shepherd’s stone shelters in the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros to the traditional terraced houses of Bairro and the moor, they all depict a history of lives lived in harmony with the natural environment.

Visiting the Natural Reserve of Estuário do Tejo, the Natural reserve of Paul do Boquilobo or the Natural Reserve of the Cavalo Sorraia is to discover the wild life from Ribatejo.
From the flamingos of the Tagus River to the fish eagle, a panoply of aquatic birds, residents or migrate ones are seen along the landscapes. Meet the Sorraia Horse, this primitive Iberia horse from the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, today, a species in danger of extinction.

What to do:

Enter in one of those traditional vessels, navigate for the Rio Tagus and notice the wealthy inheritance of the landscape, where the plains predominate somewhat populated, and you see the bulls and the horses.

Know the natural reserves, where lives different sorts of animals, where it allows the flora to fill our eyes with grace and feel the sensation of tranquility.

Do a stopping near a river beach ... and plunge!!! Use and practice the several types of nautical sports that Ribatejo has to offer (canoeing, candle, oar, etc.).
